Why everyone should be using Collagen


What is Collagen? 


Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It’s found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. After water, collagen is second most abundant ingredient in cartilage. It is the “glue” that holds the cartilage together. Collagen may take the form of a single, hair‐like strand or braided together structure. 


Precursors necessary for collagen synthesis:

  • Amino Acids

  • Vitamin C

  • Iron

  • Copper

  • Manganese


Collagen is a protein made up of amino-acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine, all of which help our body look younger, stay active and even help support the gut. Collagen is responsible for giving our skin, hair, nails and bones strength and elasticity, along with replacing dead skin cells. When it comes to our joints and tendons, it's these amino acids that helps hold the body together. As we age, and the more stress we put on our body, the greater the impact on collagen production. Getting collagen in a balanced diet can help our bodies regenerate what’s been lost or broken down in these times of stress. 


When it comes to taking as a powdered supplement form, it is found most typically from beef bovine, chicken and fish. Each type of collagen is specific for certain functions in the body and can be used that way for personal health and nutrition.  


1.) Bovine Collagen (Cow or Beef): Contains mostly Type 1 and type 3 Collagen rich in Glycine and Proline, which is helpful for creatine production to build muscle in the body. 


2.) Chicken Collagen: is mostly made up Type 2 Collagen and best for rebuilding cartilage and joint health. Type 2 is also rich in Proteoglycans, including chondroitin sulfate, in addition to glucosamine sulfate. Proteoglycans are woven around and through the collagen fibers and form a dense netting inside the cartilage. They act like a thirsty sponge, attracting water and providing a cushion, or shock absorber, for the cartilage.


3.) Marine Collagen from fish: is the most bioavailable of all collagens, meaning it gets absorbed faster and more efficiently by the body. It is Type 1 collagen, with the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. Hydroxyproline is needed for collagen stability and is created by modifying normal proline amino acids after the collagen chain is built.

  • Collagen helps to regulate stomach acid secretion, helping to prevent heartburn, stomach ulcers and other digestive conditions caused by an overly acidic environment (Remember we want to have higher stomach acid, not low!
